Pleasing Enhances Indirect Reciprocity-Based Cooperation Under Private Assessment

چکیده
Indirect reciprocity is an important mechanism for promoting cooperation among self-interested agents. Simplified, it means “you help me; therefore somebody else will you” (in contrast to direct reciprocity: I you”). can be achieved via reputation and norms. Strategies, such as the so-called leading eight, relying on these principles maintain high levels of remain stable against invasion, even in presence errors. However, this only case if agent modeled a shared public opinion. If agents have private opinions hence disagree whether good or bad, rare errors cause break apart. We show that most strategies overcome assessment problem by applying pleasing. A pleasing acts accordance with others' expectations their behaviour (i.e., them) instead being guided own, assessment. As such, achieve better than previously considered when there disagreement population. Pleasing effective few other individuals are bears additional costs. Finally, through more exhaustive analysis parameter space previous studies, we some eight still function under assessment, i.e., rates well above objective baseline. Yet, supersede formerly described ones enhance cooperation.

Cooperation under Indirect Reciprocity and Imitative Trust
Indirect reciprocity, a key concept in behavioral experiments and evolutionary game theory, provides a mechanism that allows reciprocal altruism to emerge in a population of self-regarding individuals even when repeated interactions between pairs of actors are unlikely. Recent empirical evidence show that humans typically follow complex assessment strategies involving both reciprocity and socia...
متن کاملEvolution of cooperation under indirect reciprocity and arbitrary exploration rates
Cooperation has been recognized as an evolutionary puzzle since Darwin, and remains identified as one of the biggest challenges of the XXIst century. Indirect Reciprocity (IR), a key mechanism that humans employ to cooperate with each other, establishes that individual behaviour depends on reputations, which in turn evolve depending on social norms that classify behaviours as good or bad. While...
متن کاملEvolution of cooperation through indirect reciprocity.
How can cooperation through indirect reciprocity evolve and what would it be like? This problem has previously been studied by simulating evolution in a small group of interacting individuals, assuming no gene flow between groups. In these simulations, certain 'image scoring' strategies were found to be the most successful. However, analytical arguments show that it would not be in an individua...
متن کاملIngroup favoritism and intergroup cooperation under indirect reciprocity based on group reputation
Indirect reciprocity in which players cooperate with unacquainted other players having good reputations is a mechanism for cooperation in relatively large populations subjected to social dilemma situations. When the population has group structure, as is often found in social networks, players in experiments are considered to show behavior that deviates from existing theoretical models of indire...
متن کاملIndirect Reciprocity under Incomplete Observation
Indirect reciprocity, in which individuals help others with a good reputation but not those with a bad reputation, is a mechanism for cooperation in social dilemma situations when individuals do not repeatedly interact with the same partners. In a relatively large society where indirect reciprocity is relevant, individuals may not know each other's reputation even indirectly. Previous studies i...
